DETROIT RED WINGS
2008-09 SEASON STATS

Category Rank (Conference)
2008-09 Points 112
(2ND WEst/3RD NHL)
Change from 2007-08 -3
Home Points 59
(2ND WEst/4TH NHL)
Away Points 53
(1ST WEst/1ST NHL)
Advantage Margin            +26
The Red Wings had 33 more power plays than their opponents at Joe Louis Arena and made the most of those extra chances, outscoring their rivals by 16 goals with the extra man.

Even-Strength Goals Margin        +28

Detroit's top six scorers all were plus-13 or better. The Wings are likely to miss Marian Hossa's team-high 40 goals, 30 of which came at even strength.

Special Teams Goal Margin        +21
Detroit led the NHL in power-play goals (90) and percentage (25.5), while allowing just four shorthanded goals. But the Wings had problems on the penalty kill, surrendering 71 power-play goals, including 41 away from Joe Louis Arena.

Goals by defensemen            45
As long as the Wings have the dynamic duo of Nicklas Lidstrom (16-43-59) and Brian Rafalski (10-49-59), they'll never lack for offense from the blue line. Unheralded Niklas Kronwall (6-45-51) gives the Wings another useful offensive defenseman.

Overtime Record
Total: 9-6-4 (OT: 3-6, SO: 6-4)

Detroit was a lot better in shootouts on the road (4-1) than at home (2-3). Pavel Datsyuk scored on half of his 10 attempts and was tied for second in the NHL with three game-deciding shootout goals.

Times Scored First
46 (Record: 37-4-5)

The Red Wings continue to be among the NHL's best in scoring first and turning their early leads into points. They were tops in the NHL away from home, scoring the first goal 26 times in 41 tries.

Best 08-09 Number             18
Wins by the Wings in games decided by three or more goals, the most in the NHL. The Wings won 10 home games in blowouts and led the League with eight road wins by three or more goals.

Worst 08-09 Number          76.4
Detroit's penalty-killing percentage away from Joe Louis Arena. The Wings were next-to-last in killing penalties on the road, barely ahead of Tampa Bay. They were 20th at home (80.4 percent) and 24th overall (78.3).

Scheduling
The Red Wings will spend much of October away from Detroit, starting with a two-game series against the Blues in Stockholm and ending with a five-game trip out west. They also have two more five-gamers before the Olympic break, but have a post-Olympic stretch in which they play 12 of 18 games at home.
