Flyers unveil Winter Classic retro sweater

By John McGourty - NHL.com Staff Writer

The Philadelphia Flyers will wear a "retro-looking" replica of their original team sweater when they play the Boston Bruins in the third annual Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Boston's historic Fenway Park on Jan. 1, the team announced Friday.

During a press conference at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J., forwards Danny Briere and Simon Gagne, and defenseman Braydon Coburn took shots until they shattered a block of ice in front of a goal net to unveil the team’s sweater that will be worn for the New Year's Day game.

A check of old Flyers' uniform photos revealed the sweater is very similar to the original Flyers' sweater -- right down to the name plate, rather than individually sewn letters, that once adorned Flyers' uniforms. One major difference is the Flyers' never used the black nameplate seen on the new sweater.

This Winter Classic sweater is white with the black Flyers logo encircling the orange puck inside the letter "P." It has orange piping down the sleeves and an orange cummerbund band above the waist. The neck has orange-and-black trim and the sleeve cuffs are black.

This is very similar to the uniform that the team wore from its inception in 1967 through 1982.

Fans can preorder the Flyers Bridgestone/NHL Winter Classic jersey at philadelphiaflyers.com or this weekend at Flyers training camp located at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone.
