Veteran defenseman Philippe Boucher has announced his retirement, TSN and RDS are reporting, bringing an end to a 17-year NHL career that was capped by winning the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in June.

Boucher, 36, contributed one goal and three assists in nine postseason games. His final NHL game was the opener of the Stanley Cup Final against Detroit, a series the Penguins won in seven games.

"I have always admired athletes that have retired as champions and I am humbled to have the chance to count myself among them," Boucher said. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, my coaches and the organizations I played with over the years. I am going to miss being with the boys."

After breaking into the League with Buffalo during the 1992-93 season, Boucher went on to play 748 regular-season games for the Sabres, Kings, Stars and Penguins, registering 94 goals, 300 points and a plus-57 rating. He added four goals and 14 points in 65 playoff games.

Boucher, who had career highs of 19 goals and 51 points for Dallas in 2006-07, started last season with the Stars before getting traded to the Penguins for Darryl Sydor on Nov. 16.

"I would also like to recognize the best fans in all of sports. I never took for granted what a privilege it is to play this game and how important the fans are," Boucher said.
