Oilers sign Smid, Brule and Stone

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with defenseman Ladislav Smid on a two-year contract, and with forwards Gilbert Brule and Ryan Stone on one-year, two-way deals. No financial terms were released.

Smid, 23, played 60 games in 2008-09 and established career highs in assists and points with 11 in 2008-09. He also had 57 penalty minutes.

"I'm very pleased to have Ladislav signed," General Manager Steve Tambellini said Wednesday in a statement. "He's a very competitive young defenseman that has the ability to contribute in all situations."

The 6-foot-3, 226-pound defenseman has played 202 career NHL games, all with the Oilers, scoring 3 three goals and adding 22 assists for 25 points with 152 penalty minutes.

"This is great news for me," Smid said upon signing his agreement. "I really enjoy playing for the Oilers. I feel my game is improving every year and I can't wait to get started again this fall."

Smid was the Anaheim Ducks' first-round pick, taken with the No. 9 selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to Edmonton with Joffrey Lupul, two first-round draft choices and a second-round choice in exchange for defenseman Chris Pronger on July 3, 2006.

Brule, 22, split last season between the Oilers and the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League. In 39 games with Springfield, Brule had 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points and 58 PIM. He had 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points and 12 PIM in 11 games for Edmonton.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound center has played in 157 career NHL games with 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points and 64 penalty minutes.

The Columbus Blue Jackets took Brule in the first round of the 2005 Entry Draft (No. 6), but traded him to the Oilers for forward Raffi Torres on July 1, 2008.

Stone, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the second round (No. 32) in the 2003 draft.  He was acquired, along with goaltender Dany Sabourin and a fourth-round draft choice in 2011, from the Penguins in exchange for goaltender Mathieu Garon on Jan. 17, 2009.

Prior to being acquired by the Oilers, Stone played 38 games with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, scoring 9 goals and adding 19 assists for 28 points. In 39 games with the Falcons after the trade, he scored 8 goals and had 20 assists for 28 points.

In eight career NHL games, the 24-year-old center has recorded 1 assist and 7 penalty minutes.
