Last season as an Assistant Coach, the 43-year-old Allen helped the Quad City Flames to a 36-31-6-7 record. Through his two seasons, the Flames posted a combined record of 74-63-9-14. The New Bedford, MA native began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant with Calgary's then East Coast Hockey League affiliate (ECHL), the Johnstown Chiefs before taking over as head coach in 1997. After six years with the Chiefs, Allen joined the then Florida Panthers AHL affiliate, who at the time were the San Antonio Rampage, for two seasons, first as an Assistant Coach, then as Head Coach. Allen rejoined the Calgary organization in 2004 as Assistant Coach for the AHL Lowell Lock Monsters.

During his 10-year playing career, Allen competed in the All American Hockey League, Atlantic Coast Hockey League, Colonial Hockey League, Central Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League. During the 1988-89 campaign, Allen won back-to-back ECHL titles, first with the Carolina Thunderbirds and the following year as a member of the Greensboro Monarchs.
