Report: Rob Blake back with Sharks

According to a report first aired on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the San Jose Sharks and defenseman Rob Blake have agreed on a new one-year contract that reportedly will pay him $3.5 million.

The 39-year-old defenseman had 10 goals and 45 points in 73 games in his first season with the Sharks. He also led the team's defensemen with a plus-15 rating, a tremendous turnaround after going minus-19 and minus-26 the previous two seasons with the Kings. His 110 penalty minutes were second on the team.

More than what he does on the ice, Blake is a respected veteran presence in the dressing room, and was one of the players GM Doug Wilson imported last summer to add a winning mentality to the locker room. It worked in the regular season, as Blake helped the Sharks to League-highs of 53 wins and 117 points. Both marks also were franchise bests.

Blake, a 1988 fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings, has 233 goals and 747 points in 1,200 games with the Kings, Avalanche and Sharks. He enters his 20th NHL 20th on the all-time list for points among defensemen, and 27th in games played. If he plays more than 54 games -- he hasn't played fewer than 62 games since 1995-96 -- he'll move into the top 20.
