DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson was scratched from Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks after undergoing an appendectomy Wednesday afternoon

Ericsson complained of abdominal pain after the morning skate and was taken to the Detroit Medical Center for testing.  He was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent successful surgery.  The 25-year-old was replaced in the lineup by Derek Meech, who has appeared in only one game this postseason.

The Wings are also playing without captain Nicklas Lidstrom (lower-body injury), Hart Trophy finalist Pavel Datsyuk (foot) and veteran center Kris Draper (groin).

Quote of the Day

Life's about opportunity and how you respond to that opportunity, and obviously he must have some swagger about him, some confidence about him, because he was solid. He made some good saves. He was 6-foot-3 on every shot, which is a good thing for a goalie. He played well. We got a win.
