1979: The Rangers win Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Canadiens, 4-1. But after losing Game 1, the Habs woke up and won the next four winning their fourth-straight Cup.

1980: Islanders Hall of Fame defenseman Denis Potvin scored at 4:07 of overtime giving the Islanders a 4-3 win in the first game of the Stanley Cup Final against the Flyers. The Islanders had lost just four games prior to the Final while eliminating the Kings, Bruins and Sabres.

The Islanders would beat the Flyers in six games and capture their first of four consecutive Cups. Potvin led Islanders defensemen with 13 assists and 19 points in 21 playoff games that season.

1987: Oilers center Mark Messier scored the game-winning goal as Edmonton beat the Red Wings 6-3, eliminating Detroit in five games. Edmonton went on to win their third of five Cups in seven seasons when they defeated the Flyers in seven games in the Stanley Cup Final.

1995: Brendan Shanahan had a hat trick helping the Blues to a 5-2 win and tying their first-round series with the Canucks 2-2. St. Louis, however ,would lose the series in seven games. Shanahan, who was playing his last season with the Blues before being traded to the Hartford Whalers for Chris Pronger, led the team with nine points despite missing two games of the series.

1999: Maple Leafs left wing Sergei Berezin scored just 2:18 into overtime giving Toronto a 3-2 win in Game 4 tying their second-round series with Pittsburgh at two games apiece. Toronto would go on to win the series in six games advancing to the Eastern Conference Final for the third time in seven seasons where they were defeated in five games by the Buffalo Sabres.

2002: Colorado center Peter Forsberg scored 2:47 into overtime giving the Avalanche a 2-1 win and forcing a seventh game in their second-round series against the Sharks. The Avalanche beat the Sharks 1-0 in Game 7 two nights later advancing to the Western Conference Final for the fourth-straight season where they lost in seven games to a Detroit Red Wing team that featured Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Nicklas Lidstrom and a young Pavel Datsyuk. Forsberg, who missed the entire regular season with an ankle injury led the Avalanche with 18 assists and 27 points that playoff season.

2007:
Anaheim defenseman Scott Niedermayer scored at 14:17 of overtime giving the Ducks a 4-3 win and tied the Western Conference Final against the Red Wings after losing the first game, 2-1, in Detroit. The Ducks proceeded to beat Detroit in six games and won their first and only Cup in franchise history when they beat the Senators in five games in the Stanley Cup Final.
