1979: The Rangers beat the Islanders, 2-1, in Game 6 of their second-round series, eliminating the Islanders. With the win the Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for just the second time since 1950, but they were defeated by the Canadiens in five games after they beat Montreal 4-1 in the first game of the series.
1980: The Flyers beat the Minnesota North Stars, 7-3, in Game 5 of their semifinal series, eliminating Minnesota from the playoffs. This was the second time in the five-game series that Philadelphia would score seven goals. Prior to eliminating the North Stars, the Flyers swept the Oilers in three games in a best-of-five, first-round series and beat the Rangers in five games in the second round. This season marked the fourth time the Flyers had been in the Stanley Cup Final in a seven-season span, but Philadelphia was eliminated by the Oilers in six games.
1990: Edmonton left wing Craig Simpson scored the game-winning goal against Chicago goalie Greg Millen in the Oilers' 4-2 victory in Game 4 tying the second-round series at two games apiece after Edmonton had lost two of the first three games in the series. While the Oilers still had goalie Grant Fuhr, who had been in goal for Edmonton when they won four Cups in their last six seasons, they had turned to Bill Ranford as their starting goalie for this playoff season. Edmonton would go on to win the Cup, which was their first and only Cup they won after trading Wayne Gretzky to the Kings in August of 1988 and Simpson would lead the Oilers with 16 goals that playoff season.
1997: Brendan Shanahan scored at 17:03 of the second overtime period giving the Red Wings a 3-2 win in Game 4 of their second-round series against Anaheim, completing a four-game sweep. Even though the Red Wings swept the series, it was still a competitive series with three games going into overtime. Shanahan, who had been acquired from the Hartford Whalers earlier that season, led the Red Wings with nine goals in that playoff season as the Red Wings won their first Cup since 1955.
2004: Brad Richards scored his third game-winning goal in three-straight games giving the Lightning a 3-1 win in Game 1 of their second-round series against the Flyers. Richards would proceed to set an NHL record by scoring seven game-winning goals that playoff year and would win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs as the Lightning won their first Cup in franchise history by beating the Flames in a seven-game series.
2006: Carolina defenseman Niclas Wallin beat Devils goalie Martin Brodeur at 3:09 overtime giving the Hurricanes a 3-2 win in Game 2 of their second-round series after the Hurricanes had tied the game in the final minute of regulation. The goal is one of just three in Wallin's 61 career playoff games. The win gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 series lead, which they wouldn't relinquish as they advanced to the Eastern Conference Final where they defeated the Sabres in seven games and then won the Cup by beating the Oilers in a seven-game series.
