Luongo, Mason and Kessel named NHL 'Three Stars' of the week

NEW YORK -- Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, St. Louis Blues goaltender Chris Mason and Boston Bruins right wing Phil Kessel have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending Apr. 12. ( Listen: Three Stars of the Week)

FIRST STAR -- ROBERTO LUONGO, G, VANCOUVER CANUCKS Luongo highlights

Luongo stopped 88 of 89 shots in posting a 3-0-0 record with a 0.33 goals-against average, .989 save percentage and two shutouts as the Canucks (45-27-10) clinched the Northwest Division title. He began the week by recording 46 saves in a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in a Northwest Division showdown Apr. 7. He made 20 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Apr. 9 and turned aside 22 shots for his ninth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Apr. 11. Luongo posted a 33-13-7 record with a 2.34 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and nine shutouts in 54 appearances this season.

SECOND STAR -- CHRIS MASON, G, ST. LOUIS BLUES Mason highlights

Mason stopped 72 of 74 shots in posting a 3-0-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against average, .973 save percentage and one shutout as the Blues (41-31-10) claimed their first playoff berth since 2003-04. Mason recorded 28 saves in a 5-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes Apr. 7, stopped 16 shots in the playoff-clinching 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets Apr. 10 and posted his sixth shutout of the season with a 28-save performance in a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche Apr. 12. Mason started the Blues' last 33 games of the season and was 24-8-6 with a 2.08 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and five shutouts in 38 games from Jan. 19 through the end of the season. Mason led NHL goaltenders in wins and GAA over that span.

THIRD STAR -- PHIL KESSEL, RW, BOSTON BRUINS  Kessel highlights  

Kessel led the NHL in goals for the week with five and added one assist as the Bruins (53-19-10) finished the season with the Eastern Conference's top record and in second place the NHL overall standings. Kessel recorded one goal in a 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators Apr. 7, scored again in a 5-4 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens Apr. 9 and finished the week by recording three goals and one assist in a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders Apr. 12. Kessel led the Bruins in goals with a career-high 36 and ranked fourth on the club in points with 36-24--60 in 70 games.
