Fans' Choice Save of the Season

Thursday, 04.09.2009 / 12:00 PM / NHL Insider

By Adam Schwartz and Brad Holland - NHL.com Staff Writers

It was a funny season for goaltenders.

Injuries and spotty play plagued some of the game's best, frustrating NHL GMs, coaches, fans, and, of course, fantasy owners everywhere.

But, as always, a number of goaltenders -- from some surprising locations -- emerged as bona fide stars.

Blue Jackets rookie Steve Mason could be the first rookie to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie since Ed Belfour did it in 1991.

Nashville's rookie Pekka Rinne went save-for-save with Mason during much of the second half and could challenge the youngster for what was once believed to be an open-and-shut case for the Calder Trophy.

The veterans got into the act as well.

Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff shrugged off a Herculean workload to eclipse the 39-win mark for the fourth consecutive season, while Boston's Tim Thomas was nothing short of spectacular all season for the Eastern Conference-champion Bruins, and could fill his trophy case with more than one NHL award come June.

And one of these goalies -- Thomas, Kiprusoff, Joey MacDonald, Marty Turco or Marc-Andre Fleury -- will earn a very prestigious award in the next 24 hours by placing claim on the Fans' Choice Save of the Season.

So, watch the videos and then cast your ballot -- as many times as you like -- in the poll at the top of the next page to help push your favorite hit over the top.

We'll tabulate the votes throughout the week and Friday we will announce the Fans' Choice Save of the Season.

Quote of the Day

I was surprised. I knew I got it. It's tough. You never know how hard it is until it registers on the gun. I got pretty much all I could into and you just hope for the best.
