SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Johnny Boychuk of the Providence Bruins was named the winner of the Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League's outstanding defenceman Friday.

Entering play Friday night, Boychuk led all AHL defencemen with 20 goals, 43 assists and 63 points in 73 games this season.

He has a plus-21 rating and has recorded 273 shots on goal, the most by an AHL defenceman since 2002.

The 25-year-old Edmonton native has 164 points (47-117) in 367 career AHL games.

Quote of the Day

He is, in my opinion, one of the best defensemen in the NHL and continuing to grow. I think his game, from an offensive standpoint, he continues to drive our offense... I think there's still tremendous upside for Oliver.
