Top Hungarian hockey player Gabor Ocskay dies of heart attack at age 33

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Gabor Ocskay, three times Hungary's hockey player of the year, has died of a heart attack, his team said Wednesday. He was 33.

Ocskay died late Tuesday in Budapest, the team said. He was sidelined for four months in 2004 with a heart disease, but returned again to this club Alba Volan, with which he won nine national championships.

Family spokesman Laszlo Horog told state news agency MTI that Ocskay had been under regular medical supervision and that there had been no signs of illness before his death.

On Saturday, Ocskay had one assist in Alba Volan's 4-0 victory over Ujpest, which gave his team a 4-1 series win in the championship final.

Ocskay played 187 times for Hungary's national team and last year had a key role in helping the country return to the top tier of the world championships for the first time in 70 years.

He was expected to be on the team for this year's world championship in Switzerland in April, where Hungary will be in a group with Canada, Belarus and Slovakia.

Ocskay was named Hungary's player of the year in 1994, '95 and 2006.

His funeral will be held in Szekesfehervar, in central Hungary, where Alba Volan is based.
