Brodeur's Career: By the Numbers

Tuesday, 03.17.2009 / 10:44 PM / Brodeur Watch

By John Kreiser - NHL.com Columnist

Martin Brodeur now stands alone as the winningest goaltender in NHL history after getting win No. 552 in New Jersey's 3-2 victory over Chicago on Tuesday night.

Here's look at Martin Brodeur's career by the numbers:

1 -- Team that has a winning record against Brodeur. The Vancouver Canucks are 9-6-0 lifetime against Brodeur. He's also 7-7 with one tie against Detroit, but that doesn't include four wins against the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final.

2 -- Scoreless ties in which Brodeur has been involved. Both came in the month of December, and both took place at the Continental Airlines Arena: Dec. 23, 1996 against Buffalo and Dec. 1, 2000 against the Islanders.

3 -- Shutouts by Brodeur in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final, a feat that has not been accomplished by any other netminder.

4 --
Victories by Brodeur against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the fewest he's had against any team. Brodeur is 4-2-2 against the Jackets, who entered the NHL in 2000.

6 -- Most shutouts by Brodeur against any opponent in home games. He's blanked both of New Jersey's local rivals, the New York Rangers and Islanders, six times each at home.

9 -- Wins by Brodeur against teams coached by Joel Quenneville, including the record-setting 552nd on Tuesday night. Brodeur's highest win total against another coach is the 26 he has against Paul Maurice, now with Carolina -- the Devils' opponent on Wednesday. He's 26-9-4 against Maurice-coached teams.

10 -- Shutouts by Brodeur against the New York Islanders, the most he's had against any team. In all, Brodeur has 100 career shutouts, second to Terry Sawchuk's record of 103.

15 -- Victories by Brodeur against Olaf Kolzig, the most he's had against any other goaltender. Ed Belfour had 10 wins against Brodeur, the most by a rival goaltender. Brodeur is 6-10-3 lifetime against Belfour.

17 -- Career regular-season decisions against Patrick Roy, whose career record for victories Brodeur broke on Tuesday night. Brodeur was 9-8-0 against Roy, who retired after the 2002-03 season.

19 -- Ties and overtime/shootout losses for Brodeur against the New York Rangers, by far his highest total against any opponent.

20 -- Victories by Brodeur at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, the most he's had in any building that the Devils haven't called home. In all, he's had victories in 48 NHL buildings, topped by the 266 he had at the Continental Airlines Arena, the Devils' home until last season.

35 -- Victories by Brodeur against his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens. It's the most he's had against any team not in the Atlantic Division. His 35-15-5 record includes his record-tying 551st career victory at Montreal last Saturday.

40 -- Shots faced by Brodeur in a 2-0 victory at Boston on Jan. 28, 1999. It's the most saves Brodeur has ever had to make in a shutout. The fewest is 9, against Washington in a 3-0 home victory on Dec. 4, 2003.

43 -- Wins by Brodeur against the Philadelphia Flyers, the most he's had against any team. He is 43-22-8 all-time against the Flyers. His second-favorite victims are the New York Islanders (41 wins), followed by the Rangers (39).

238 -- One-goal victories by Brodeur -- including win No. 552, a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

315 -- Losses by Brodeur in regulation (293) and overtime/shootouts (22). Ironically, it's the same number of losses as Roy had in his Hall of Fame career,

613 --
Goaltenders (before Tuesday) who had played at least one NHL game. Brodeur now has more victories than any of them.

24,782 --
Saves by Brodeur in his 988 NHL games, including 30 in Tuesday night's record-setting victory over Chicago. He's allowed 2,139 goals against, giving him a .914 save percentage and a 2.20 goals-against average.
