WASHINGTON - NHL goal-scoring leader Alex Ovechkin missed the Washington Capitals' game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night because of a bruised heel.
Ovechkin was injured Wednesday when he took a shot off his right skate during practice, forcing him to remove his skate and hop to the locker room with the help of a trainer.
Coach Bruce Boudreau initially thought the reigning league MVP would be fine, but Ovechkin was announced as a scratch shortly before the opening faceoff.
The Capitals said Ovechkin would be day-to-day. Their next game is Sunday at home against Pittsburgh.
It was only the second game Ovechkin has missed in his career because of injury.
The first came during his rookie season in 2005-06. He was also away for two games early this season to spend time with his ailing grandfather in Russia.
Ovechkin tops all players with 46 goals. His 83 points rank second in the league.
