Senators sign Kuba to three-year deal

Wednesday, 03.04.2009 / 10:56 AM / 2009 Trade Deadline

By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

One of the big names that could have been on the move Wednesday is officially staying put.

The Ottawa Senators announced they have re-signed 32-year-old defenseman Filip Kuba to a three-year contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kuba was acquired this summer from the Tampa Bay Lightning and is on pace for a career year. He has 29 points along with a team-leading plus-8 rating in 54 games. Kuba, who had a career-high 37 points two seasons ago, has 236 points and 263 penalty minutes in 585 career NHL games.

The trade with the Lightning on Aug. 29, 2008 is looking good for the Senators now.

Not only is Kuba having a career year, Ottawa also picked up defenseman Alexandre Picard and a first-round pick in this year's Entry Draft for defenseman Andrej Meszaros. Murray sent that first-round pick to the New York Islanders as part of the trade that brought center Mike Comrie and defenseman Chris Campoli to Ottawa on Feb. 20.

Quote of the Day

I was surprised. I knew I got it. It's tough. You never know how hard it is until it registers on the gun. I got pretty much all I could into and you just hope for the best.
