Legace waived; Blues recall Holt

Manny Legace's career with the St. Louis Blues might have ended Friday morning when the team put him on waivers, according to published reports. The Blues said Friday they have recalled Chris Holt from Peoria of the American Hockey League.

According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams have until Saturday at noon to claim Legace off waivers. If he is not claimed, he will likely be sent to Peoria.

Legace was an All-Star in 2007-08, but lost his job as the team's No. 1 goalie to Chris Mason just before the All-Star break when Mason got hot and Legace couldn't find his game after suffering a lower body injury on Jan. 19 against Boston.

Legace allowed one goal on two shots before leaving the game against the Bruins. He didn't play again until Monday, when he surrendered three goals on eight shots to the Red Wings before coach Andy Murray pulled him in favor of Mason.

Legace is 13-9-2 for the Blues this season with a 3.13 goals against average. Mason is only 7-14-3, but he has a 2.60 GAA and has stopped 173 of the last 181 shots he's faced. He's 4-1-2 in his last seven appearances after going nearly two months without a win (Nov. 30-Jan. 19).

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Legace was stunned to learn he had been put on waivers.

"It's extremely tough," Legace told the newspaper. "You play your heart out for a team, and the minute you hit a little bit of a rough patch, they dump on you. It was very hard to hear."

Holt, who was 7-5-1 with a 1.70 GAA and .932 save percentage in Peoria, will be Mason's backup Saturday against Colorado. He hasn't played in the NHL since the 2005-06 season, when he made two saves in 10 minutes of mop-up duty for the New York Rangers. He even played five games in the East Coast Hockey League this season.
