Stanley Cup Final rematch in Game of the Week

Bitter rivals Rangers/Flyers flexed into Feb. 15 Game of the Week

Wednesday, 02.04.2009 / 5:11 PM / NHL on NBC Spotlight
NEW YORK – In a rematch of the last season's memorable Stanley Cup Final, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin (who rank 1-2 in the NHL in points) and the Pittsburgh Penguins host Nicklas Lidstrom, Marian Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Game of the Week, Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC, presented in high definition. Mike "Doc" Emrick (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Pierre McGuire (inside-the-glass reporter) call the action. McGuire will pull double duty, hosting NBC's studio show alongside analyst Mike Milbury on site at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. NBC's NHL coverage is produced by Sam Flood, the son of a hockey coach and former captain of the Williams College hockey team.

"What a year for Pittsburgh sports fans, a Stanley Cup Final and now a Super Bowl champion," said Olczyk, who played and coached in Pittsburgh. "Expectations are high for the Penguins but time is going by and the time is now for them to get things going. What a better time than at home, against the team that defeated them in the Final."

The Red Wings defeated the Penguins in six games to capture their fourth Stanley Cup title in 11 years and 11th overall in franchise history. Lidstrom became the first European player to captain a Stanley Cup champion. The Red Wings have continued their success from last year ranking second in the Western Conference with 71 points. The Penguins on the other hand have struggled ranking 10th in the Eastern Conference with 53 points but are just three points shy of the eighth position.

ARCHRIVALS FLYERS-RANGERS FLEXED INTO FEB. 15 "GAME OF THE WEEK": The Sunday, Feb. 15 contest between the New York Rangers and their longtime nemesis the Philadelphia Flyers has been selected for the "NHL Game of the Week" on NBC. Puck drop at Madison Square Garden is at 12:30 p.m. ET. Currently, the teams are separated by just two points in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"There are no two ways about it, these teams hate each other and always will," said Milbury.

NBCSPORTS.COM PRESENTS "STAR-CAM": NBCSports.com will offer a "Star-cam" in conjunction with NBC broadcasts, which will follow one player on each team throughout each of his shifts. Following the game, NBCSports.com will present a post-game show with game highlights and highlights from "Star-cam" and "Net-cam," along with analysis from McGuire and Milbury.

FLEX SCHEDULING & CONSISTENT 12:30 PM ET START TIME: For the first time, "Game of the Week" broadcasts have a consistent start time – 12:30 p.m. ET on Sundays (except for April 12, 2 p.m. start time). For the second straight season, the NHL and NBC will utilize flex scheduling and will be able to select from up to four games on Sunday afternoons. Thirteen days prior to the scheduled games (on Mondays), NBC, in conjunction with the NHL, will select one of those games as the "Game of the Week" to be broadcast during the NBC window. The other games will remain available to the teams' regional carrier but will not be televised during NBC's broadcast window.

NBC will also broadcast weekend games throughout the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs and up to five Stanley Cup Final games.

Quote of the Day

I just wanted to do something to take my mind off the shot and let me relax a little bit. It seemed like the fans liked it. I'm glad I was able to score.
