MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Veteran centre Anthony Nigro did it all on Sunday afternoon, scoring once in regulation time and potting the only goal in the shootout to give the Ottawa 67's a 2-1 victory over the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in Ontario Hockey League action.
Nigro, a 19-year-old native of Woodbridge, Ont. who is in his third season in the OHL, scored his 18th goal of the season on a 55-foot wrist shot early in the first period and then scored from in close in the shootout as the 67's (26-15-2-2) handed the Majors (22-19-1-2) their fifth loss in a row.
"Our defence really held up strong for most of the game," said Nigro, who has scored four times in five shootout attempts this season. "We tend to have high-scoring games and this was such a close-checking game. Our goalies have really started to step it up for us too."
Nigro's goal in the first period stood up until Mississauga defenceman Blake Parlett tied the game near the 13-minute mark of the third period. Parlett was stopped on his first shot but got his own rebound and beat Ottawa goalie Adam Courchaine.
Nigro, who has 11 goals and 20 points in 19 games since joining Ottawa after starting the season in Guelph, was the only one of five players to score in the shootout. All three Mississauga shooters missed the net on their attempts.
Courchaine was rock-solid in net for the 67's, stopping 41 shots. Majors netminder Chris Carrozzi made 30 saves.
