PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Matt Hackett turned aside 34 shots as the Plymouth Whalers held on for a 3-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League action Wednesday evening.
Plymouth (13-13-3) won their fourth straight game, all with Hackett in goal. With starter and Nashville 2nd round draftee Jeremy Smith slumping, Hackett has claimed the Whalers starting job, winning his last six starts.
Chris Terry paced Plymouth's offence with a goal and assist, while R.J. Mahalak and Ryan Hayes added singles.
Saginaw (19-9-0-1) was held off the scoreboard until there were less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, when Joe Pleckaitis netted a power-play goal. Then 1:22 later, Tyler Murovich drew the Spirit within one but Hackett closed the door the rest of the way.
Ed Pasquale, who has played in all 29 Saginaw games this season, finished with 26 saves.
