What a difference 24 hours made for the Carolina Hurricanes and their coach, Peter Laviolette.

One night after giving up a pair of late goals in a 3-2 loss at Washington, the Hurricanes returned home and pulled off their own third-period comeback at the expense of the Ottawa Senators.

Defensemen Dennis Seidenberg and Joe Corvo scored goals and backup Michael Leighton made 22 saves as Carolina rallied for a 2-1 victory at the RBC Center on Friday night to give gave Laviolette his 240th career victory, tops among all American-born coaches.

"Those things happen — every year, somebody plays their 400th game, somebody scores their 300th point," Laviolette said. "If you stay around long enough, something will happen, and I've been fortunate and lucky to stay around long enough in this game."

Martin Gerber, who won a franchise-record 38 games for the Hurricanes in 2005-06 but was supplanted by current starter Cam Ward during their run to the Stanley Cup, stopped 28 shots for the Senators and was given a 1-0 lead late in the second when Mike Fisher scored.

But Seidenberg got Carolina even on a power play with 8:54 remaining. His slap shot from just inside the blue line beat Gerber and was the first goal Ottawa had given up while shorthanded in four games.

Corvo, who was traded by the Senators to the Hurricanes last season, then came back to haunt his former team once again. He recorded his first career hat trick against Ottawa on March 16, and on Friday he notched the game-winner with 2:40 left, ending the Senators' 4-0-1 surge.

"It was just a point in the game where I felt like I wanted to get involved and maybe see what would happen in there," Corvo said. "Sure enough, there was a turnover and it ended up on my stick. I just put it on net."

Sergei Samsonov capitalized on that turnover, keeping the puck in the zone, and Gerber stopped a slapper by Tim Gleason. But Corvo got to the rebound in the right circle and snapped it past Gerber for the lead.

"It's just a little extra in the Kool-Aid before the game," Corvo said, joking about his recent success against the Senators.

Leighton's only mistake was when he couldn't cover a shot into his pads by Daniel Alfredsson and Fisher zipped in from the left of the net to poke the rebound into the net 1:52 before the second intermission.

"It wasn't our best game, no question," Fisher said. "We tried to stick with it. We didn't create a ton of offensive chances. We scrambled a bit in our own end. ... We just didn't handle the pucks that well tonight. (Gerber) played well and kept us in it. To lose it like that in the third is disappointing."

Life had to be pretty miserable in Atlanta by the end of last week, after the Thrashers lost 7-0 to Philadelphia and 6-1 to New Jersey in the span of five days, leaving them a dismal 2-7-2 on the season.

There's been a lot more smiling in the time since, and it continued when Jason Williams scored his second of the night on a power play 48 seconds into overtime, lifting Atlanta over Buffalo for its third straight victory and first on the road this season.

Just 12 seconds after Derek Roy was sent off for hooking, Williams' backhand chip of the  rebound of Ilya Kovalchuk's slap shot sailed over Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, quieting the HSBC Arena crowd and bringing the Thrashers swarming off the bench in celebration.

"Guys were reminding each other that we came back from two goals last night, so there was no reason why we couldn't do it again," said Williams, referring to a 4-3 win against the New York Islanders on Thursday. "We just wanted to make sure we battled hard. It was a good win, and we've got a little bit of a roll going."

Bryan Little also scored twice and Todd White added a power-play goal for Atlanta, which received 28 saves from veteran Johan Hedberg.

"We know we have a good team and we knew that from the start of the season," Little said. "I just think we got away from our game for a while and we started to lose our confidence, but the last three games have been great for us and I think we're building our confidence up again and we're playing like the team we can be."

Tomas Vanek scored his League-leading 12th of the season for the Sabres, who also got goals from Clarke MacArthur, Ales Kotalik and Maxim Afinogenov. Buffalo had three separate one-goal leads but couldn't put Atlanta away.

"We had our chances," Roy said. "At the end of the game we missed two or three, and that was the critical time of the game to score."

Buffalo carried a 4-3 lead into the third only to see White even the score at the eight-minute mark. Vyacheslav Kozlov earned his third assist of the game on the goal, and Little had the primary assist to finish with a three-point night.

"More than getting the win, we did a lot of positive things as a team," Hedberg said. "We have to keep building off that every day."

Mark Parrish was happy to be back in the NHL and Dallas was ecstatic to have him. The 31-year-old winger Parrish scored three goals in his debut for the Stars and Marty Turco had a strong game with 28 saves in cooling down red-hot Anaheim at the Honda Center.

Fabian Brunnstrom and Mike Richards also had goals for Dallas, which rebounded after giving up 10 goals during the first two games of a five-game road trip.

Parrish started the season without an NHL team after scoring 16 goals and 30 points last season for Minnesota. He had 208 goals and 372 points in 660 career games for the Wild, Kings, Islanders and Panthers.

"I hope there's no pressure or expectations after tonight," Parrish said. "I was hoping to get off to a good start, I got some good bounces and great plays by my linemates. I'm still trying to figure out how the third one went in. I didn't feel like I had lost anything. … I was skating at my alma mater (St. Cloud State) and preparing for my chance and I wanted to make the most of it. I wanted to make a difference and contribute to a win and it feels good that we won tonight."

Brendan Morrison scored his first goal as a member of the Ducks and Scott Niedermayer added a power-play score midway through the third, after the outcome had all but been decided.

"They were playing hard," Niedermayer said. "They were a team that was hungry for the point tonight, probably hungrier than we were. I think that showed. All those things that happened out there, I think they deserved to win."

It took Parrish only 10:44 to score a power-play goal that gave the Stars a 2-0 lead, as he connected off a one-timer from the right of the crease. Morrison got the Ducks on the board late in the period, but Parrish struck again 1:13 into the second, beating Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the slot during another man-advantage. He completed the hat trick 4:39 later on a breakaway, at which point Giguere was pulled in favor of Jonas Hiller.

"Great start by Parrish, we knew he was in his element," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "He had some timely goals on the spot and he was a solid player for us tonight."

Parrish wasn't the first Dallas player this season to score three times in his first game with the team. Brunnstrom had a hat trick in his first NHL game, and he registered his sixth goal at 7:07 of the first to open the scoring, tapping in the rebound of Mike Ribeiro's wraparound attempt.

"It felt really good to get a good start and give us the spark we needed," Brunnstrom said. "Parrish played great and we knew it would be a tough game, so it's nice to get this win and we need to build on this now."

Richards made it 5-1 at 9:01 of the third and Niedermayer completed the scoring 1:34 later to close the Ducks' gap to three.

In addition to Parrish's instant offense, the Stars also got defenseman Sergei Zubov back into the lineup. Zubov made his season debut after missing all of training camp and the first 12 games of the season following hip surgery in September.
