NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur had surgery on Thursday to repair his torn left biceps near the elbow.
"According to the doctors, his surgery was 100 percent successful," Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. "The timetable for his return remains three to four months."
Brodeur was injured Saturday against Atlanta making a second-period glove save on a shot that was going wide of the net.
"I just extended my arm real quick and I just felt a pop, and a tapping kind of feeling in my biceps," the 36-year-old said Tuesday, discussing the first major injury of his 15-year career.
Brodeur has won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender four times, including last season when was 44-27 with a 2.17 goals-against average. His seven seasons with 40 or more wins are an NHL record, and his 2.20 career goals-against average is the lowest in the NHL's modern era. He set a single-season record for wins with 48 in 2006-07, breaking Bernie Parent's old mark of 47.
Brodeur has 544 career wins, eight shy of breaking Patrick Roy's NHL record of 551. Brodeur is five shutouts from tying Terry Sawchuk's NHL record of 103.
Kevin Weekes has replaced Brodeur as the Devils' No. 1 goaltender. He had an outstanding first game, stopping 28 shots in a 2-0 loss to Buffalo on Monday and he got his first win on Wednesday with a 4-3 shutout win over Tampa Bay.
