New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a meniscus injury, and the team said Saturday that he will miss four to six weeks.

The Islanders said DiPietro had the surgery on Friday.

DiPietro is 0-2-0 in three starts this season with a 3.91 goals-against average. He underwent offseason surgery on his hip and right knee, played in only one preseason game, then dressed but did not play in the Islanders' first four games. He lost 2-0 to Florida and 5-3 to Dallas, then was lifted after allowing two goals in the first period to Carolina on Oct. 25 and replaced by Joey MacDonald, who had started the Isles' first four games.

The Islanders later said DiPietro had been removed because of an lower body injury that was not related to the offseason surgeries.

DiPietro has played seven seasons for the Islanders, recording 112 wins with a 2.79 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. He made the All-Star Game last season.

The Islanders have recalled Yann Danis from Bridgeport of the AHL to replace DiPietro on the roster. Danis started Saturday night's game against Montreal.

Quote of the Day

I watched many times this year the series between the Russians and Canada in 1972, and he was a dominating player there. After I watched the tapes, I respect him a lot more because he turned the series around. He was the guy. In that time, he was the best in the world. It’s a big honor for me to tie him.
