Rookie goalie Foote earns second shutout as Brampton blanks Mississauga 1-0

Brandon Foote's Ontario Hockey League career is off to a stellar start, and his play just might be the spark the Brampton Battalion need to overcome their slow start.

The rookie goaltender from Scarborough, Ont., made 23 saves to earn his second shutout of the season as Brampton won its third game in a row, blanking the Mississauga-St. Michael's Majors 1-0 on Friday night.

"It's a good feeling," said Foote, who posted his fifth win against a single loss in seven games this season. "The guys did a great job in front of me and they kept a lot of the shots to the outside. That made my job easy."

Russian import Evgeny Grachev scored the only goal of the game - his second goal of the season - just before the 12-minute mark of the third period.

The Battalion (5-6-0-0) are now within three points of the Central Division-leading Barrie Colts after slipping to the bottom of the division with four straight losses in early October.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Plymouth 5, Niagara 4; Barrie 3, Saginaw 0; Erie 4, Guelph 1; Kingston 6, Sault Ste. Marie 2; Kitchener 5, Belleville 4 (SO); London 6, Owen Sound 5 (OT); Windsor 5, Ottawa 3; Sarnia 8, Oshawa 6; and Sudbury 5, Peterborough 4.

At Mississauga, Ont., it was the second time in as many games that the St. Michael's Majors (5-3-0-0) were shut out on home ice. Mississauga has gone 159 minutes and 21 seconds without scoring a goal at home.

St. Michael's Majors netminder Chris Carrozzi, who came into the game as the second leading goalie in the OHL with a 2.10 goals-against average, stopped 33 of 34 shots.

Whalers 5, IceDogs 4

At Plymouth, Mich., Ryan Hayes scored with less than three minutes remaining as the Whalers edged Niagara.

Terry Chris had a hat trick and Vern Cooper also scored for Plymouth (4-5-1-0).

Chris DeSousa had a pair, while Dylan MacEachern and Marco Insam added goals for the IceDogs (3-5-1-3).

Colts 3, Spirit 0

At Saginaw, Mich., Michael Hutchinson stopped 34 shots as Barrie shut out the Spirit.

Stefan Della Rovere scored two goals and Kyle Clifford added another for the Colts (6-3-1-0).

The loss snapped Saginaw's (6-4-0-0) four-game winning streak. Edward Pasquale turned aside 27 shots for the Spirit.

Otters 4, Storm 1

At Guelph, Ont., Luke Gazdic's power-play goal at 7:32 of the first period stood up as the winner as Erie calmed the Storm.

Brett Cook, Sean Jones and Brandon Biggers also scored for the Otters (4-6-0-1).

Peter Holland had the lone goal for Guelph (7-4-0-1).

Frontenacs 6, Greyhounds 2

At Kingston, Ont., Josh Brittan scored two first-period goals and the Frontenacs built a 4-0 lead that Sault Ste. Marie could not overcome.

Zack Fenwick, Nathan Moon, Charles Sarault and Jaroslav Kruzik added goals for Kingston (3-6-0-1).

Jacob Muzzin and Michael Fine replied for the Greyhounds (6-4-1-0).

Rangers 5, Bulls 4 (SO)

At Kitchener, Ont., Kevin Hudes scored the winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout as the Rangers outlasted Belleville.

Brandon Mashinter scored twice in regulation, while T.J. Battani and Jeff Skinner also scored for Kitchener (6-2-0-1).

Stephen Johnston had a pair of goals for the Bulls (7-3-0-1), who also got a goal and two assists from Eric Tangradi, as well as a goal from Andy Bathgate.

Knights 6, Attack 5 (OT)

At London, Ont., Matt Clarke scored a power-play goal 11 seconds into overtime as the Knights edged Owen Sound.

Nazem Kadri added a pair, and John Carlson, Philip McRae and Justin Taylor scored the other goals for London (7-3-0-1).

Joey Hishon had three points - including two goals - while Lane MacDermid, Grant McGee and Mike Lomas also scored for the Attack (3-4-2-1).

Spitfires 5, 67's 3

At Ottawa, Greg Nemisz scored his second goal of the game with two minutes remaining in regulation time to lift Windsor over the 67's.

Ryan Ellis, Austin Watson and Dale Mitchell added goals for the Spitfires (10-1-0-0), who won their fourth in a row.

Thomas Nesbitt, Tyler Tiffoli and Julien Demers replied for Ottawa (5-6-0-0).

Wolves 5, Petes 4

At Sudbury, Ont., Patrik Lusnak scored two goals to tie the game before Matt Dias potted the winner midway through the third period as the Wolves came back to defeat Peterborough.

John Kurtz and John McFarland also scored for Sudbury (5-2-0-1).

Tony Romano, Jack Walchessen, Zach Hamden and Liam Heelis answered for the Petes (4-9-0-0).
