Grades you're happy to take home

Wednesday, 09.03.2008 / 9:00 AM / Season Preview

By John Kreiser - NHL.com Columnist

Advantage Margin            +34

Not surprisingly, the Wings' margin was built at home: They drew 37 more power plays than their opponents in 41 games at Joe Louis Arena, while actually allowing three more advantages than they got on the road.

Even-Strength Goals Margin        +49

The Wings allowed just 106 goals at full strength and 111 with the teams playing at even strength, fewer than any team except Anaheim. They also tied Philadelphia for the League lead with 13 goals while playing 4-on-4.

Special Teams Goal Margin        +24

Percentage-wise, Detroit's special teams were actually better on the road, finishing second on the power play (20.7, matching their home performance) and fourth in penalty-killing (84.8, compared with 83.1 at home).

Goals by defensemen            40

Having both Brian Rafalski (13 goals) and Nicklas Lidstrom (10, plus 60 assists) is almost unfair. Few teams can muster that kind of firepower on the blue line.

Overtime Record             Total: 7-2-5 | OT: 2-2 | SO: 5-5

The Wings were much better at home (4-2) than on the road (1-3) in shootouts, mostly because their goaltenders allowed seven goals in 13 attempts away from Joe Louis Arena.

Scheduling

The Wings get to do a lot of traveling early, with a five-game Western trip in October and a three-game swing through Western Canada before Thanksgiving. After that, they get 10 of the next 13 at home; they also have six of their last eight games at Joe Louis Arena.

Quote of the Day

One player does not make your team. One player can help your team, but one player does not make your team. We're not a bare-bones organization.
