ATLANTA - The NHL has its first 60-goal scorer in 12 years.

Washington Capitals sniper Alex Ovechkin scored twice against the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday night to reach 60 goals on the season.

He beat Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen in the first period for his 59th of the season before getting No. 60 with 8:30 left in the third.

The last NHLers to surpass 60 goals in a season were former Pittsburgh Penguins teammates Mario Lemieux (69) and Jaromir Jagr (62) in 1995-96.

Ovechkin's previous best was 52 goals in his rookie season.

The Caps have six games remaining in the regular season for him to add to this year's total.
