Iginla becomes Flames leader in goals during 7-3 win over St. Louis

CALGARY - The Calgary Flames have a new franchise leader in goals.

Jarome Iginla scored the 365th goal of his career during Calgary's 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday night. The Flames captain one-timed a pass from Kristian Huselius and had the puck go in off the backside of Blues defenceman Eric Brewer at 18:27 of the first period. Iginla's 41st goal of the season gave Calgary a 3-1 lead and was greeted with chants of "Iggy! Iggy!"

He passed Theoren Fleury on the team's all-time list.

Alex Tanguay, with two, Kristian Huselius, Matthew Lombardi, Marcus Nilson and Daymond Langkow also scored for Calgary (36-23-10).

Brad Boyes scored two goals and David Backes added one for St. Louis (29-30-10), which is 1-8-1 in its last 10 games.

Fleury lives in Calgary but was not in attendance at the game. The team showed a short pre-recorded congratulatory message on the jumbotron that concluded with Fleury smiling and saying, "See you at 500."

The 30-year-old Iginla has spent all 11 of his NHL seasons with the Flames. He ranks third in points (743) and was already the franchise leader in games played (847).

Calgary now heads out on a four-game road trip as the leader in the Northwest Division. A red-hot 7-1-2 run has them one point up on Minnesota and two ahead of Colorado.

Clinging to a 3-2 lead against the Blues, Calgary got a pivotal goal at 9:02 of the second period when Lombardi scored his 11th of the season while short-handed. The speedy Flames center broke in alone on Hannu Toivonen and neatly tucked the puck into the net with one hand as he cut across the crease.

Toivonen was brought in to start the second period in place of Manny Legace, who gave up three goals on 11 shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Kiprusoff made 29 saves for the Flames to improve to 34-20-10.

His most timely save came in the opening moments of the second period when he thwarted Ryan Johnson on a short-handed breakaway after a turnover at the St. Louis blue-line by Adrian Aucoin.

The save came with the Flames ahead 3-1. Boyes scored his first of the night shortly after to draw St. Louis to within a goal.

Calgary got off to an uncharacteristic fast start when Tanguay darted into the Blues zone and wristed a shot into the top corner to give the Flames the lead after just 21 seconds. Huselius made it 2-0 at 7:13 before Backes one-timed in Andy McDonald's pass for a power-play goal at 9:06.

Calgary's three-goal first period marked the first time since Dec. 13 they've scored that many times in the opening period and only the third time all season.

Leading 4-2, Calgary blew the game open in the third period when Nilson and Langkow scored 65 seconds apart to increase Calgary's lead to 6-2.

Down 6-3, Blues coach Andy Murray pulled Toivonen for an extra skater with over five minutes remaining and St. Louis on a power play. However, the move backfired as Tanguay scored into the empty net for his second of the game.

Notes: It was the first goal in 21 games for Huselius while Lombardi scored for the first time in 20 games ... Kiprusoff was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct when after a collision in the crease with LW Martin Rucinsky that knocked his facemask off, he tossed the puck with his trapper at Rucinsky hitting him in the nose ... Blues C Keith Tkachuk (shoulder) was out of the lineup ... The seven goals were the most for the Flames this season ... Legace appeared in his 300th career game.
