Game 1 postgame quotes: Michel Therrien

Q.  You had a lot of young guys out there playing their first game in this situation.  Was it the nerves tonight?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  I don't know if it was the nerves.  But definitely that was the worst performance of the playoffs.  We didn't compete like we were supposed to compete.  And it's a good lesson.

Q.  Detroit was able to do, in the second and third period, what they like to do.  They started rolling on you guys.  They had the puck almost the whole time.  They out-shot you a whole bunch.  You could never get that momentum back from them.  How do you stop that?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  Well, they played a really good game.  They deserve a lot of credit.  In the meantime, we didn't play our game.  So I'm expecting a better effort from our team next game.

Q.  This is the first time you've really faced adversity in these playoffs.  Are you interested to see how this young team responds?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  I don't agree with you about facing adversity.  We did face adversity through the course of the season.  We lost one game.  And one thing we know, we always bounce back before, after a fair performance, and I'm expecting we're going to bounce back next game.

Q.  Can you talk about the mistakes made on the first two goals?  I think the first goal was a line change situation and the second one, just a guy got beat on the forecheck.

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  Bad decision with the puck.  Bad change.  Those are mental mistakes against a team like the Red Wings.  You can't do those type of mistakes.  I thought we got a good start in the first ten minutes.  We had the puck.  We were creating some chances.  We weren't able to create some penalty, because we were on the puck.  Would have been nice to score a goal.  A power play would have given us some confidence.  Obviously we would love to kill it.  But they really took it over in the second period.

Q.  You mentioned the power plays, you had the four in the first period.  Did you like your power play, what it was doing, the way you moved the puck and the chances it created?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  We took some quality shots on the blue line.  Didn't get the bounce around the net.  If you get the right bounce, I could give a goal, get give confidence.  It would have been nice to get confidence with our power play.

Q.  How much of an upgrade in speed and overall talent did you guys see tonight compared to what you faced in the playoffs so far, especially speed?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  Obviously every time you go further in the playoffs you meet quality teams.  And there's no doubt this is the best team we're facing right now.  That's why we're here.
