NHL.com's 2007-08 Stars Season Preview Package:
Intro | Goalies | Defense | Forwards | Feature | Numbers | Sked | Roster

Advantage Margin:
+50
When it came to power plays, the Stars were two different teams. At home, they had 49 more chances than the opposition (232-183), while on the road, they had just one more opportunity (195-194).

Even-Strength Goals Margin: +7
No Dallas forward had more than 15 goals or 32 points at even strength. But what the forwards don’t do offensively, they make up for defensively — opponents scored just 128 goals at even strength.

Special Teams Goal Margin: +17
The Stars had solid special teams (7th on the power play, 11th in penalty killing), and used their boatload of extra chances to come out solidly ahead. The only thing they didn’t do well was score shorthanded (3 SHGs, tied for last in the League).

Category Rank
(Conference / NHL)
2006-07 Points 107
(4th West / 6th NHL)
Change From 2005-06 -5
Home Points 58
(6th West / 7th NHL)
Road Points 49
(5th West / 8th NHL)

Goals by defensemen: 41
The tandem of Philippe Boucher (19) and Sergei Zubov (12) helped make up for some of the lack of firepower up front. Boucher led the Stars with 12 power-play goals and Zubov added nine. Zubov, a silky puck-mover, is also one of the NHL’s best in shootouts.

Goals by forwards: 174
Jere Lehtinen (26) and Mike Modano (22) were the only Stars to break the 20-goal mark. Dallas needs a scoring winger and some better health — Brendan Morrow had 16 goals despite missing half the season with a wrist injury, and Modano lost 23 games with hip and groin problems.

Overtime Record: 15-3-4 (OT: 6-3, SO: 9-4)
No team has been as successful during the first two seasons of the shootout as the Stars (21-5). They were especially good on the road last season, winning seven of nine shootouts and allowing just 8 goals on 39 tries.

Times Scored First/Record: 41 (Record: 32-7-2)
The Stars’ .780 winning percentage when scoring first was third in the NHL. They also tied for third with a .439 percentage when allowing the first goal, and their 18 wins when allowing the opening goal was tied for second.

Best 06-07 Number: 98
Goals allowed (including two in shootouts) by the Stars in their 41 road games, tied with Vancouver for the fewest in the NHL. The Stars allowed just 99 goals at home and were the only team to give up less than 100 goals both home and away.

Worst 06-07 Number: 59
Points by Mike Ribeiro, the Stars’ top scorer. No playoff team (and only four of the 14 teams that missed the playoffs) had a team scoring leader who failed to crack 60 points.

Scheduling:
The Stars play all five of their Eastern Conference road games in one trip — visiting all five Atlantic Conference rivals in a seven-day span the week after Thanksgiving, following a five-game homestand. They also have a nasty four-game divisional swing before playing their final two games at home.
