CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Joey Hishon, the Colorado Avalanche's first-round pick (No. 17) in the 2010 Entry Draft, sustained a hand injury of an undetermined nature during a scrimmage Sunday and didn't return.

"Our guys wanted to get him off," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "He'll be re-evaluated again later this afternoon or tomorrow morning. I'll know more tomorrow morning, but I think it was more precautionary than anything."

Hishon, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound center, had 16 goals and 24 assists in 36 games last season for the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League.

Defenseman Kyle Cumiskey suffered what Sacco called a "slight groin strain" and also left the ice at the South Suburban Family Sports Center.

"We wanted to keep him off," Sacco said. "We want to make sure he's ready before he gets back on. We don't want it to be something that lingers on with him."
