Maple Leafs back from Classic win to host Rangers

Saturday, 01.04.2014 / 11:06 AM

RANGERS (20-20-2) at MAPLE LEAFS (21-16-5)

TV: NHLN-US, CBC, MSG

Last 10: New York 5-4-1, Toronto 5-3-2

Season Series: This is the second of three games between the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. New York earned a 2-1 shootout victory at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 23. Jonathan Bernier made 43 saves for Toronto.

Big Story: The Maple Leafs play a game indoors for the first time in nearly a week, since a 5-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Air Canada Centre. Toronto extended its win streak to three Wednesday with a 3-2 shootout victory against the Detroit Red Wings in front of 105,491 fans at Michigan Stadium in the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

Team Scope:

Rangers: New York was unable to make it three wins in a row Friday, when Chris Kunitz and Jussi Jokinen scored two goals apiece and Sidney Crosby had three points in the Rangers' 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center.

Henrik Lundqvist allowed five goals on 28 shots, marking the ninth time in his past 10 starts he's given up at least three goals. He allowed three on the first 10 shots he faced against the Penguins.

"I'm just disappointed, not surprised," Lundqvist said. "You go out and prepare this morning to play a solid game. Unfortunately, it was just too easy for them to create the big chances. It was a tough game to play."

Maple Leafs: Toronto could have a new face on its blue line Saturday night. During the game against Detroit on Wednesday, the Maple Leafs announced the acquisition of defenseman Tim Gleason from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defensemen John-Michael Liles and Dennis Robertson.

Gleason, 30, has played in 616 NHL games with the Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings. He has 15 goals, 113 assists and 591 penalty minutes. He had one assist in 17 games for Carolina this season.

"There's been some talk throughout the year," Gleason said Friday of a possible trade. "Just leading up to it, ultimately it was our decision as a family. We knew about it about a week ago and kind of see how things worked out, and it did. I've moved on and I'm excited to start here and get going."

Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul on Friday was fined $10,000 for cross-checking Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves in the first period Wednesday.

Who's hot: Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello has two goals and three assists in the past three games. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh has a goal and three assists in the past four. … Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk has a three-game point streak (one goal, two assists).

Injury report: Rangers center Derek Dorsett broke his fibula Friday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. … Maple Leafs centers Trevor Smith (hand) and Dave Bolland (ankle tendon laceration) are out.
