WHL Roundup: Wheat Kings to play for Ed Chynoweth Cup for second straight year

BRANDON, Man. - The Brandon Wheat Kings are headed back to the Western Hockey League final.

Nolan Patrick had three goals and two assists as the Wheat Kings downed the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 on Friday in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final, taking the series 4-1.

Brandon also played for the Ed Chynoweth Cup last season but fell in four games to the Kelowna Rockets. The Wheat Kings will face the Seattle Thunderbirds this year after they eliminated the Rockets on Wednesday in the Western Conference final.

Brandon has gone 12-4 through three rounds while Seattle swept its three series and is on a 12-game post-season win streak. Dating back to the regular season, the red-hot Thunderbirds have won 25-of-26 games.

Game 1 goes next Friday in Brandon.

Kale Clague and John Quenneville also scored for the Wheat Kings, who got a 24-save outing from Jordan Papirny.

Patrick and Nolan are tied for the lead in playoff scoring. Both forwards have 24 points in 16 games.

Jake DeBrusk and Evan Polei found the back of the net for the Rebels, who are the host team for the 2016 Memorial Cup which begins May 20.

Rylan Toth turned away 26-of-31 shots for Red Deer.

Both clubs went 0 for 4 on the power play.
