Five Twitter accounts worth following for this NHL season

Here are five Twitter accounts worth following ahead of the NHL's regular season:

P.K. Subban, defenceman, Montreal Canadiens (@PKSubban1)

An Olympian, philanthropist, and Norris Trophy winner, P.K. Subban has become one of the biggest names in the NHL. Personable and funny off the ice, Subban drives the Canadiens' power play and deliveries thundering hits on Montreal's blue line. His Twitter account highlights his busy life on and off the ice in both official languages.

"Seeing my name in the atrium gave me goosebumps! It's an honor to be able to partner with #MontrealChildrensHospital," said Subban on Sept. 16 after donating $10 million over the next seven years to the hospital.

Evander Kane, forward, Buffalo Sabres (@evanderkane_9)

Evander Kane has been a controversial figure since his debut with the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009. After the team moved to Winnipeg and became the Jets he repeatedly found himself in hot water with pundits like Don Cherry as well as his teammates. Kane was traded to the Buffalo Sabres last season. He often grabs headlines off the ice with pictures cross-posted to Twitter and Instagram. One photo that drew the ire of some was a picture of him holding a stack of bills to his ear like a cell phone. More recently, he grabbed headlines by apologizing to girlfriend Mara Teigen with a billboard in Los Angeles.

"Love my Bentley but nothing beats my Ferrari. The only problem is my hockey bag takes up the passenger seat," said Kane on Aug. 19 in a picture posted to Instagram of his silver speedster.

Boring Sean Monahan, parody account, Calgary Flames (@boringmonahan)

Centre Sean Monahan has been a revelation for the Calgary Flames, scoring 53 goals in his first two seasons in the NHL and being named an alternate captain this off-season at just 20 years old. This is not his Twitter account, however. Instead, one of his teammates has created a parody account teasing Monahan for his allegedly boring lifestyle. Boring Sean Monahan focuses on his love of untangling headphones, dry toast, and bananas. It also satirizes controversial moments around the NHL.

"I thought Connor McDavid would be happy today but he wasn't," said Boring Sean Monahan on April 18 after the Oilers won the NHL draft lottery, virtually guaranteeing that phenom McDavid would be selected by rebuilding Edmonton.

Roberto Luongo, goalie, Florida Panthers (@strombone1)

Roberto Luongo — then with the Vancouver Canucks — briefly had a poor reputation after demanding that Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas "pump his tires" when the two faced each other in the 2011 Stanley Cup final. Since then, Luongo has become one of the funniest players in the NHL, with Twitter being the main forum for his jokes.

"I will make it my mission this year, work 24h around the clock 2 get Jags to bring this puppy back! It's gonna happen," said Luongo on Sept. 15, with a picture of teammate Jaromir Jagr from the early 1990s with the Czech superstar wearing a mullet. On Oct. 15 Luongo tweeted "Guys we did it!!!!!" with a link to an article about Jagr agreeing to bring back the hairstyle.

Kyle Dubas, assistant general manager, Toronto Maple Leafs (@kyledubas)

The 28-year-old Kyle Dubas established himself as a forward-thinking hockey mind as general manager of the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The Toronto Maple Leafs signalled a new thought process in the staid organization when they brought on Dubas as assistant general manager with a focus on statistical analysis to better the team.

"Very nice hockey displayed by #Leafs prospects Martins Dzierkals and Dmytro Timashov in their first @QMJHL action," said Dubas on Sept. 25, with a YouTube link to the highlights of the two prospects playing in major junior.
