Michael Ferland has goal and assist in Flames victory over Canucks

CALGARY - Micheal Ferland led the way with a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 in pre-season action on Friday night.

Sam Bennett and Michael Frolik, with his second in as many games, also scored for Calgary (2-2).

Jake Virtanen had the lone goal for the Canucks (1-2). The two teams meet again Saturday night in Vancouver.

Jonas Hiller made 25 saves in net for Calgary. Richard Bachman stopped 16-of-19 shots for the Canucks before giving way to Jacob Markstrom, who made 12 saves.

Ferland broke out against Vancouver during last season's playoff with a dominating physical performance.

He broke a 1-1 tie at 18:03 of the first period when Dennis Wideman's centring pass deflected off the stick of Vancouver's Frankie Corrado and straight to Ferland in the slot, who promptly whipped a shot behind Bachman.

In the second, Ferland replaced Jiri Hudler on the top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau and took advantage of the opportunity. Ferland neatly set up Monahan on a two-on-one — who scored his first of the pre-season — to put the Flames ahead 3-1.

Ferland has only appeared in 26 NHL regular season games, but the 23-year-old has shown upside and signed to a two-year, one-way deal two weeks ago.

Calgary tied the game 1-1 at 15:26 off Bennett's first of the pre-season, rifling a rebound into the net off a Frolik shot.

Frolik rounded out the scoring at 16:09 of the second period with a crafty display of skill. The free agent signing kicked the puck from his skate to his stick and fired the puck past Markstrom in one motion.

Hiller's only blemish in his first full game was Virtanen's power-play goal at 4:29 of the first period in which he was screened by two bodies in front of the net.

The 33-year-old veteran is locked in a battle with Karri Ramo and Joni Ortio for the Flames' two goaltending spots.

The game finished with a trial of 3-on-3 overtime — the first for Calgary and second for Vancouver. The Flames prevailed in that too on a goal from defenceman Kris Russell.

Notes: Calgary coach Bob Hartley shuffled his lines and defence pairings each period. ... The Flames had a mix-up with their official game roster and after a couple first period shifts that included getting in a fight with Brandon Prust, forward Blair Riley had to come out of the game and was replaced by Kenny Agostino.
