Red Wings could retire No. 91 for Sergei Fedorov

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings will consider retiring the No. 91 worn by forward Sergei Fedorov, general manager Ken Holland said Thursday.

Fedorov, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2015, scored 400 of his 483 NHL goals and 954 of his 1,179 points with the Red Wings. He helped them win the Stanley Cup three times and won a Hart Trophy, Lester Pearson (now Ted Lindsay) Award and two Selke Trophies.

"At the appropriate time I'll weigh in, we'll talk about whether his number should go in the rafters or not," Holland said, mentioning input in the decision would come from owners Mike Ilitch and Marian Ilitch and senior vice president Jimmy Devellano. "But certainly, being selected to go in the Hall of Fame is an incredible accomplishment. He was a great player and a great Red Wing. Certainly worth serious consideration."

The most recent number retired by the Red Wings was No. 5 for Nicklas Lidstrom in 2014. Other numbers retired are No. 1 for Terry Sawchuk; No. 7 for Ted Lindsay; No. 9 for Gordie Howe; No. 10 for Alex Delvecchio; and No. 12 for Sid Abel.

Fedorov left Detroit after the 2002-03 season and signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Anaheim Ducks after turning down the Red Wings' five-year, $50 million offer.

Fedorov, now general manager of CSKA Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League, later played with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals and finished his career with Magnitogorsk Metallurg of the KHL.

The decision on retiring his number likely won't be made soon. In fact, No. 91 may be on a Red Wings jersey this season.

Veteran center Brad Richards, who signed a one-year contract with Detroit on Wednesday, has worn No. 91 and No. 19 in his career. He wore No. 91 with the Chicago Blackhawks last season.

Richards will not wear No. 19, which was retired for Steve Yzerman.
