Senators agree to terms with Stone, Zibanejad

The Ottawa Senators agreed to terms with forwards Mark Stone and Mika Zibanejad on contract extensions, the club announced Thursday.

Stone, a 2015 Calder Trophy finalist, agreed to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $3.5 million. Zibanejad agreed to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $2.625 million.

Stone, 23, led the Senators with 26 goals and was second to defenseman Erik Karlsson with 64 points.

"Mark became one of our better players, if not one of the best, right at the end of the year in particular, but throughout the stretch run and when we were trying to make the playoffs," general manager Bryan Murray said. "We feel he still has growth in him but we also know going forward that he's going to be a very important player if the organization is going to make strides to a championship."

Zibanejad, 22, had 20 goals and 46 points this season.

"Obviously they are two young players with bright futures for the organization and we think that Mika on a two-year deal gives him the opportunity to take the next step in his career to become a key center iceman for the Senators," Murray said. "We're very happy with his progress to this point in time and we think he has a bright future."

Each player was a restricted free agent. Forwards Mike Hoffman and Alex Chiasson are the Senators' remaining RFAs, while forward Erik Condra is the only unrestricted free agent who was on their Stanley Cup Playoffs roster.

Stone's contract will pay him $2.25 million in 2015-16, $3.75 million in 2016-17 and $4.5 million in 2017-18. Zibanejad will earn $2 million next season and $3.25 million in 2016-17.
