MacWilliam scores winner as Marlies net four in third to beat Checkers

TORONTO - A four-goal third period was the difference for the Toronto Marlies on Sunday.

Andrew MacWilliam scored the winner and had an assist for Toronto as it doubled the Charlotte Checkers 6-3 in American Hockey League action.

Josh Leivo, Sam Carrick and Byron Froese also had a goal and an assist for the Marlies (22-21-9), the affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kevin Marshall found the back of the net 37 seconds into the third for his first of the year and Gregg McKegg added the other goal.

Alex Aleardi, Brody Sutter and Brock McGinn scored for Charlotte (20-27-6), the farm club of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Antoine Bibeau stopped 25 shots for the win while former Marlie Drew MacIntyre turned aside 33-of-38 shots in 59:23.

Toronto was held scoreless on four power plays while the Checkers went 1 for 5.

The Marlies named Troy Bodie the team's captain earlier in the day. He was held pointless against Charlotte, recording three shots.
