JC Lipon scores 39 seconds into the first as IceCaps down Pirates

PORTLAND, Maine - JC Lipon opened the scoring 39 seconds into the first period and added an assist as the St. John's IceCaps downed the Portland Pirates 5-2 on Sunday in American Hockey League action.

Will O'Neill, Julian Melchiori and Austen Brassard scored in the second period for St. John's (25-23-8), the farm club of the Winnipeg Jets. Scott Kosmachuk would add another midway through the third to round out the attack.

Jordan Szwarz and Brendan Shinnimin answered in the third period for the Pirates (28-22-3), the affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes.

Jussi Olkinuora turned away 24 shots for the win. Louis Domingue started for Portland, kicking out 22-of-25 shots in 32:07. Mike Lee went the rest of the way, stopping eight shots in 27:53.

The IceCaps went 1 for 8 with the man advantage while the Pirates scored once on five opportunities.
