OTTAWA -- Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin was injured against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday and did not return to the game.

Emelin was injured on the first shift when he collided with Senators wing Mark Stone and fell into the boards in front of the Canadiens bench.

It is the second game in the past three the Canadiens have lost a defenseman.

Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sergei Gonchar left the game in the second period with an upper-body injury after he fell headfirst into the end boards when he was hit by David Clarkson. Canadiens defenseman Nathan Beaulieu also served 17 penalty minutes for his confrontation with Clarkson after the hit.

P.K. Subban wound up playing a career-high 35:21, the most in an NHL game this season, and Andrei Markov played a season-high 31:57.

Gonchar has not played since Saturday.
