WHL Roundup: Sanford nets hat trick to lead Tigers to rout over Hurricanes

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. - Offence was easy to come by for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday night.

Cole Sanford recorded a hat trick and added two assists, while Trevor Cox had two goals and four assists as the Tigers doubled up the Lethbridge Hurricanes 8-4 in Western Hockey League action.

Steven Owre, Kyle Becker and Anthony Ast also scored for Medicine Hat (25-9-2).

Jaeger White, Giorgio Estephan, Jamal Watson and Zane Jones supplied the offence for the Hurricanes (9-21-5), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Nick Schneider started in net for the Tigers and Zac Robidoux started for Lethbridge, but both goaltenders were ejected after a third-period fight.

Schneider made 10 saves on 13 shots through 48:27 while Marek Langhamer turned aside 3-of-4 shots in relief. Robidoux turned away 36-of-43 shots and Stuart Skinner stopped 6-of-7 shots the rest of the way.

Medicine Hat went 2 for 6 on the man advantage while the Hurricanes failed to score on one power play.

SASKATOON — Nik Amundrud stopped all 35 shots he faced as the Blades blanked Prince Albert.

Nikita Soshnin and Sam McKechnie both scored twice for Saskatoon (9-25-3) and Alex Forsberg added the other Blades goal.

Nick McBride turned away 27 shots for the Raiders (16-20-1).

ROYALS 4 COUGARS 0

VICTORIA — Coleman Vollrath kicked out 38 shots as the Royals shut out Prince George.

Austin Carroll had two goals and an assist to lead Victoria (18-18-3), helping the Royals snap a five-game losing skid. Dante Hannoun and Brandon Fushimi also found the back of the net.

Tavin Grant made 26 saves in net for the Cougars (18-19-0).

WHEAT KINGS 4 WARRIORS 2

BRANDON, Man. — Rihards Bukarts had a goal and three assists as the Wheat Kings doubled up Moose Jaw.

Colton Waltz, Jayce Hawryluk and Tim McGauley rounded out the attack for No. 5 Brandon (26-7-4).

Jiri Smejkal and Torrin White replied for the Warriors (15-19-3), who have now lost five straight.

VANCOUVER — Scott Eansor scored the winner at 17:50 of the third period as Seattle edged the Giants.

Lane Pederson and Ethan Bear opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds (16-15-4). It was their third-straight victory.

Jackson Houck and Alec Baer responded for Vancouver (16-19-1) for its first regulation loss since Nov. 28.

CALGARY — Luke Philp scored his 15th goal of the season as Kootenay slipped past the Hitmen.

Jon Martin, Zak Zborosky and Levi Cable also had goals for the Ice (20-17-0), who have now won five straight.

Adam Tambellini struck twice for Calgary (19-14-3) with Kenton Helgesen adding the other the Hitmen's third-straight loss.

RED DEER, Alta. — Conner Bleackley scored twice and added an assist as the Rebels rallied to beat Edmonton.

Brooks Maxwell had the other Red Deer (20-13-4) goal, all of which came in the third period.

Andrew Koep opened the scoring with his 10th of the year for the Oil Kings (16-16-5).

REGINA — Patrick D'Amico scored the first of five straight goals to lead the Pats over Swift Current.

Adam Brooks, Rykr Cole, Austin Wagner, Jared McAmmond and Dryden Hunt supplied the rest of the offence for Regina (21-12-2).

Colby Cave had a power-play goal for the Broncos (18-15-4).

PORTLAND, Ore. — Kailer Yamamoto had a hat trick to lead Spokane over the Winterhawks for its sixth straight win.

Adam Helewka had the other goal for the Chiefs (20-12-3).

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Justin Gutierrez had the winner in the third period as Tri-City edged Everett.

Parker Wotherspoon struck twice for the Americans (18-16-1), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Nikita Scherbak and Noah Juulsen found the back of the net for the Silvertips (21-10-4).
