Rogers Hometown Hockey celebrates Burnaby

Prior to the telecast Sunday of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators (6 p.m. ET; NHLN-US, CITY), NHL Network will televise the "Rogers Hometown Hockey" broadcast at 5:30 p.m. ET on CITY and the NHL Network in the United States. This week's location is Burnaby, British Columbia, to celebrate the city's iconic hockey story.

Among the features airing on the pregame show:

-- The story of Ottawa Senators defenseman Patrick Wiercioch, who was born in Burnaby, and forward Kyle Turris. The two were teammates on the Burnaby Express of the British Columbia Hockey League during the 2006-07 season and were reunited as members of the Senators organization in 2011-12.

-- Joe Sakic, perhaps Burnaby's most famous son, went by the nickname "Burnaby Joe." Sakic played 20 NHL seasons for the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche, scored 1,641 points, was a two-time Stanley Cup champion in 1996 and 2001 and won a gold medal with Canada in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

-- The Burnaby Winter Club has produced NHL stars such as Glenn Anderson, Cliff Ronning and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Another star is on the cusp, as Seattle Thunderbirds center Matt Barzal is a top-10 ranked player for the 2015 NHL Draft.

-- For the kids at the Courage Canada Hockey Camp for the Blind, it's more than just an opportunity to strap on skates and hit the ice -- it's a chance to share their experiences with other kids facing similar challenges.
