Saturday's NHL Capsules

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins gave the New York Islanders their first loss of the season, 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Islanders (4-1) had been the Eastern Conference's last unbeaten team.

Hornqvist, who assisted on Malkin's goal, added an empty-net tally with 1:20 left to seal the Penguins' win. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby had two assists, including the 500th of his career.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves in the win.

Thomas Hickey staked the Islanders to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but New York failed to post its first 5-0 start. Jaroslav Halak stopped 35 shots.

SHARKS 4, DEVILS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Logan Couture had a goal and two assists, and Antti Niemi made 35 saves as San Jose topped pesky New Jersey.

Joe Pavelski added a goal and an assist, and Joe Thornton iced the game with an empty net goal — his 1,200th NHL point — as the Sharks won for the fourth time in five games. They have earned 9 of 10 points, losing only in a shootout to the New York Islanders.

Patrick Marleau added a goal for Sharks.

Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique gave the sellout crowd of 16,592 something to cheer about, scoring in a 4:10 span to pull within New Jersey one with 7:50 to play.

Niemi made the lead stand with excelling stops on Cammalleri, Henrique and Damien Brunner before Thornton scored his first of the season with 1:14 to play.

Cory Schneider made 28 saves for the Devils in their home opener, including a glove stop on a penalty shot by Tommy Wingels with 3:44 left.

BRUINS 4, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Niklas Svedberg made 32 saves in his first NHL shutout, and Boston blanked Buffalo.

It was just the third career start for Svedberg, who replaced Tuukka Rask in the third period of Boston's loss Thursday at Montreal.

Dougie Hamilton, Zdeno Chara, Torey Krug and Carl Soderberg scored for the Bruins (3-4). All four goals came at even strength, and three were scored against Buffalo's top line.

The Sabres (1-5) were shut out in consecutive games for the first time since October 2003. Buffalo went 0 for 7 on the power play, falling to 0 for 18 on the season.

Jhonas Enroth made 31 saves.

The Bruins' first three goals were scored by defencemen.

CAPITALS 2, PANTHERS 1, SO

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington scored on all three shots in the shootout, and Justin Peters made 20 saves in his start this season to lift the Capitals over Florida.

Jason Chimera scored his first goal of the young season for the Capitals (3-0-2), who improved to 10-0-1 in their last 11 meetings against their former division rival.

Brad Boyes' power play goal for Florida (1-3-1) tied the game early in the third period.

Each team scored on its first shootout attempt, and Nicklas Backstrom then put the Capitals ahead 2-1. After Peters stopped Jussi Jokinen, Alex Ovechkin scored the clincher for Washington.

In a matchup of backups, Peters outdueled Al Montoya. The Panthers have scored five goals in five games. Washington outshot Florida 28-21 overall.

RED WINGS 1, MAPLE LEAFS 0, OT

DETROIT (AP) — Henrik Zetterberg scored the lone goal 4:50 into overtime to give Detroit a victory over Toronto and a sweep of the teams' home-and-home series.

Zetterburg streaked down the right side and sent Niklas Kronwall's centring pass over Jonathan Bernier's shoulder.

Jonas Gustavson made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout. Bernier stopped 31 shots, but sustained his third loss of the season.

Tomas Tatar almost ended the game 80 seconds into overtime but his shot past a distracted Bernier nicked the left post.

The Red Wings won 4-1 on Friday night in Toronto.

SENATORS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2

OTTAWA (AP) — Mike Hoffman made up for missing a penalty shot by scoring the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period to give Ottawa a win over Columbus.

David Legwand and Erik Karlsson also scored, and Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots to help Ottawa earn its fourth straight win after losing its opener.

Nick Foligno and David Savard scored for the Blue Jackets. Curtis McElhinney allowed two goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky, who gave up one goal on 18 shots.

Columbus scored two goals 41 seconds apart in the second period to tie the game.

Ottawa had made it 2-0 at the 7-minute mark on Karlsson's goal that was reviewed after McElhinney was knocked over by Nick Foligno as he made the save and slid into the back of the net. The goal stood, but it was the end of the night for McElhinney, who was injured on the play.

CANADIENS 3, AVALANCHE 2

MONTREAL (AP) — P.K. Subban scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist in Montreal's victory over Colorado.

Carey Price made 32 saves to help the Canadiens improve to 5-1.

Alex Tanguay and Matt Duchene scored for Colorado, and Calvin Pickard made 33 saves in his first NHL start. The Avalanche went 1-2-1 on their trip to drop to 1-4-1 overall.

The Avalanche turned to Pickard after Semyon Varlamov aggravated a groin injury and backup Reto Berra was hurt in Thursday night in a 5-3 loss to Ottawa.
