PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Joe Morrow scored 56 seconds into overtime and Malcolm Subban kicked out 28 shots as the Providence Bruins opened their American Hockey League season with a 2-1 win against the visiting St. John's IceCaps on Friday.
Seth Griffith had a goal and an assist for the Bruins (1-0-0) while David Pastrnak tacked on two assists.
Will O'Neill supplied the offence for the IceCaps (0-0-1), who got a 27-save performance from back-up goaltender Connor Hellebucyk in 53 minutes of relief.
Peter Budaj started in net for St. John's but left 7:56 into the first period with an injury. He returned, however, to finish the game on the bench.
Providence went 0 for 6 on the power play while the IceCaps failed to score on two chances with the man advantage.
