RALEIGH, N.C. - Jordan Staal will undergo surgery on his broken right leg and is expected to miss three to four months, the Carolina Hurricanes announced.
Staal suffered a fractured fibula during Tuesday night's game at the Buffalo Sabres when he got tangled up with ex-Montreal Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges.
Carolina general manager Ron Francis announced that Staal will have surgery Friday at Raleigh Orthapedic Clinic.
Staal, a 26-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., hadn't missed a game in his first two seasons with the Hurricanes.
He has 25 goals and 46 assists in 130 games for Carolina.
