Free-agent forward Ryan Malone has agreed to terms on a contract with the New York Rangers, the team said Thursday.

The New York Post and TSN's Darren Dreger reported it's a one-year, two-way contract that will pay Malone $700,000 at the NHL level.

Malone has been taking part in informal workouts with Rangers players this week.

The 34-year-old has been a free agent since June 25, when the Tampa Bay Lightning used their second compliance buyout on the final season of the seven-year, $31.5 million contract he signed in 2008. Malone had five goals and 15 points in 57 games last season.

"Obviously I'm looking to prove myself," Malone told NorthJersey.com on Monday. "Obviously last year was not the way I wanted it to go, especially at the end. So I'm looking for an opportunity to show what type of person I am on and off the ice.

In 641 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Lightning, Malone has 179 goals and 370 points. He's scored at least 20 goals six times in 10 NHL seasons.
