D'Amigo signs two-way contract with Blue Jackets

Forward Jerry D'Amigo signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, the team announced. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 23-year-old was acquired by the Blue Jackets on July 1 from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade for forward Matt Frattin.

"When I got the call from the GM (Jarmo Kekalainen), it was a reassurance from him that there's a spot for me and if I work hard this summer, I'll have a really good chance," D'Amigo told the Blue Jackets website. "It's one of those things where you're sad to leave but also excited to join a new organization. Not that I did anything bad in Toronto, but it's almost like a fresh start for me.

"It was a simple, short conversation. They told me they need a left winger, and with the young guys they already have and adding me, they're looking for someone to fill that spot. If I can fill it, that would be awesome. I'm going to come in there as prepared as I can be, and work my hardest to get that open spot. That's my goal for this summer, to work toward making the team out of camp."

D'Amigo made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs last season and had one goal and two assists in 22 games. He had 20 goals and 33 points in 51 games for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

He was a sixth-round pick (No. 158) of the Maple Leafs in the 2009 NHL Draft.
