The Montreal Canadiens signed 2014 first-round pick Nikita Scherbak to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Scherbak had a team-high 28 goals, 50 assists and 78 points in 65 regular-season games with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League in 2013-14. He led WHL rookies in scoring by 19 points.
Scherbak played for Russia in the 2013 Subway Super Series. He participated in the 2014 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
A Moscow native, Scherbak was chosen with the 26th pick in the NHL Draft last month and the first of 13 Russian-born players selected. He took part in Canadiens development camp last week.
