Ruhwedel signs two-year contract to stay with Sabres

Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel signed a two-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ruhwedel, 24, has one assist in 28 NHL games during parts of two seasons with Buffalo, which signed him as an undrafted free agent.

He had four goals and 28 points in 47 regular-season games last season for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. He was second among defensemen on the team in points. He had two goals and five points in five Calder Cup playoff games.

Prior to joining the Sabres organization he played three seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he was First Team All-America and was named the 2013 Bob Monahan Defenseman of the Year by the New England Hockey Writers Association. In three seasons with the River Hawks he had 15 goals and 63 points in 110 games.
