Hurricanes agree to terms with forward Shugg

Right wing Justin Shugg agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team announced Monday. Shugg will make $600,000 in the NHL or $70,000 in the American Hockey League this season.

Shugg, 22, completed his third professional season in 2013-14 with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. The Niagara Falls, Ontario, native established AHL career highs in games played (75), goals (16), assists (22) and points (38), and was tied for fourth on the Checkers in goals.

Selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round (No. 105) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Shugg has 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists) in 147 AHL games. He played in 15 regular-season and 11 playoff games with Florida of the ECHL, and helped the Everblades win their first Kelly Cup in 2012.

Prior to turning pro, Shugg spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Oshawa, Windsor and St. Michael's. He helped Windsor win back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in 2009 and 2010, and reached the Memorial Cup championship game with St. Michael's in 2011.
