Senators GM Murray diagnosed with cancer

Ottawa Senators general manager and executive vice president Bryan Murray was recently diagnosed with cancer, the team announced Monday. The Senators did not release details on the type of cancer Murray has. They issued the following statement:

"Mr. Murray is undergoing further testing and will begin treatment immediately for this condition as prescribed by the team's doctors in collaboration with specialists. Mr. Murray's treatment schedule may require him to be away from the Senators' office periodically. During his periodic absence, assistant general managers Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee will be responsible for managing the Ottawa Senators hockey operations department.

"On behalf of the entire Senators family, the team is asking that the thoughts, prayers and support of the entire hockey community are with Bryan and his family.

"The Senators and Mr. Murray ask that you please respect his family's privacy during this time.

There will be no further comment from the Senators organization."

Murray has been the Senators GM since June 18, 2007. He was named the executive vice president of Senators Sports & Entertainment on July 1, 2009. Prior to being named GM, Murray was the Senators coach for two-plus seasons. In 2007, he led Ottawa to its only appearance in the Stanley Cup Final.

He has been a GM in the NHL for 20 seasons, including with the Detroit Red Wings (1990-94), Florida Panthers (1994-2000) and Anaheim Ducks (2002-04).

Murray has been coach of the Washington Capitals, Red Wings, Panthers and Senators. He is ninth in the NHL in games coached (1,239) and eighth in wins (620).
